Each year, hundreds of thousands of people nationwide explore the world of cosmetic dermatology treatments.
If you are a first time patient, you may be asking questions about cost, benefits of certain procedures and whether or not these types of treatments are covered by insurance.
Below are the answers to some frequently asked questions for cosmetic newbies.
Cosmetic treatments, like Botox, lip filler injections and laser hair removal, are generally not covered by insurance—though flex spending can sometimes come in handy.
Surprisingly, and often times a point of confusion, some procedures for acne scarring and rosacea, like laser and light treatments, chemical peels, and photodynamic therapy, can fall under cosmetic and will in fact be covered by insurance companies with the proper coding.
It is important to check with your doctor’s office to clarify and explore your options for insurance coverage.
Depending on the treatment, cosmetic procedures can be priced out by area or by the amount of product.
Laser hair removal, Fraxel and IPL are generally priced out by the area—like face, neck, arms, etc.
Products such as dermal fillers are usually priced out by the number of syringes you use. It is always important to ask doctor or nurse how much product you’ll need and what the cost will be.
Depending on where you go, Botox injections can be priced out by units or by site/area.
Again, depending on which procedure you are looking at having done, you could need a series of treatments for optimal results.
Botox usually lasts three to four months, with dermal fillers such as Restylane typically lasting four to six months.
For best results, laser hair removal is typically done six to eight times per area in intervals of six to eight weeks.
Results for treatments like IPL and Fractional Resurfacing are best seen after three to four treatments, spaced out three to four weeks apart.
Always go into your initial consultation ready to ask questions.
You have tons of options, so if you’re going to spend your money on a cosmetic treatment, be sure you’ve asked all the questions you want and are confident in the medical professional performing the procedure.
