Café Au Lait
Café au lait spots are pigmented birthmarks that vary in color—brown to dark brown. They are caused by excess melanin deposits in the epidermis and respond very favorably to laser treatment. Multiple (3-6) treatments are required and treatments are usually 8 weeks apart. The Cosmetic Skin Institute in Washington, DC offers laser treatments that can significantly lighten Café au lait birthmarks.
Nevus of Ota
Nevus of Ota is a blue hyperpigmented birthmark, caused by the entrapment of melanocytes in the upper third of the dermis. It is found on the face unilaterally and involves the first two branches of the trigeminal nerve.
Nevus of Ota or blue-black facial birthmarks can be treated with the Q-Switched Lasers. Significant improvement (lightening of the birthmark) is noted after laser treatments.
